The International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS) has established the ICCS Publishing Fund to assist with the publication and distribution in Canada of scholarly monographs on Canada written by foreign Canadianists who are members of a Canadian Studies Association or Associate Member belonging to the International Council for Canadian Studies. This fund assists foreign Canadianists by granting financial aid to a recognized scholarly press once the work is published.

The Fund may also grant financial assistance for the translation from English or French into a third language and from a third language into French or English. In this case, conditions and procedures remain the same, but instead of a manuscript the press will submit a published monograph that it would like to see translated. The Publishing Fund does not fund translations from English to French or from French into English.
Eligibility and Conditions
• Only scholarly manuscripts on Canada written by foreign Canadianists are eligible.
• Manuscripts must be previously unpublished.
• Collections of poetry, novels, plays, magazine articles or conference proceedings are not eligible.
• Manuscripts consisting of previously published texts, such as excerpts of books or articles, are eligible if a third of the texts have not previously been published.
• Applications must be presented to the ICCS in either of Canada’s official languages.
• The author shall be a member in good standing of an ICCS member association or associate member. A letter of support from a Canadian Studies Association or Associate Member belonging to the ICCS must accompany the application.
The funds allocated shall apply to the printing or translating costs of a manuscript/book and not to the costs of research, typing, reproduction or any other stage in the manuscript preparation process.
Application Procedures
• Authors will be responsible for contacting and sending their manuscripts directly to the publisher.
• Once a publisher has determined that it is interested in publishing a manuscript it will seek readers’ assessments and prepare, in collaboration with the author, an application for a grant
• Applications will be forwarded by the scholarly press to the ICCS, accompanied by all (at least two) readers’ assessments. The Editorial Board of the International Journal of Canadian Studies, acting as the adjudication committee, reserves the right to secure independent assessments of manuscripts.
• The Editorial Board of the International Journal of Canadian Studies will evaluate the manuscripts submitted and will decide which works can be published under this fund, as well as the amount of the grant to be allocated. All decisions are final and not open to appeal. Applications not retained for a grant will not be carried over to the following year; re-submissions will however be accepted.
• The grant will be paid to the publisher and not to the author once the publication is complete, normally within a year from an offer of a grant. Should a manuscript not be published within two (2) years of an offer of a grant, the grant will be withdrawn and available for re-allocation.
• Once the work is published, two copies of the publication must be sent to the ICCS.
Application Content
An application must contain four (4) copies of the following documents:
1. the manuscript proposed for funding;
2. a two-page summary in French or English of the manuscript;
3. a curriculum vitae of the author(s), which includes the nature of the university affiliation;
4. all (at least two) assessments of the manuscript done by qualified readers (include name and university affiliation of assessors);
5. a detailed budget (including design, printing and marketing costs, as well as all funding sources for the proposed publication);
6. a projected publication date;
7. the number of copies to be printed;
8. a marketing plan, including advertisement;
9. a letter of support from the president of a Canadian Studies Association or Associate Member; and
10. in the case of a translation application, a brief rationale from the publisher for translating the book.

The deadline for submitting applications is October 31.

Those eligible:
Those in the social sciences or humanities who are in the process of preparing a graduate thesis or doctoral dissertation on Canada. (See past recipients...)

Purpose:
To enable successful candidates to spend 4-6 weeks at a Canadian university or research site other than their own doing research related to their thesis or dissertation in the field of Canadian Studies. The scholarship is not intended to initiate a thesis or dissertation but rather to provide access to crucial scholarly information and resources in Canada in support of a thesis/dissertation that is close to or at the point of writing.

Conditions:
1. The student must be at the thesis or dissertation stage;
2. The student must have obtained in writing the support of a faculty member at a Canadian university who has agreed to act as the student's academic sponsor during the tenure of his/her award. The sponsor will act in an informal capacity and will arrange for library privileges, contacts with other faculty and students, and generally try to facilitate the student's research. The academic sponsor will not be expected to act in the role of supervisor.

Procedure:
Each applicant should submit an application and all supporting materials directly to the secretariat of his/her national Canadian Studies association (or to the association president in cases where there are no permanent secretariats). It is the responsibility of the national Canadian Studies association to forward no more than 3 nominations to the ICCS. No more than two scholarships per association will be awarded at each adjudication.
The nomination will comprise:
1. a completed application form [ available in PDF format ] which will be signed by the candidate and the president of the national association;
2. a one-page short proposal outlining the thesis/dissertation project. The proposal must also state clearly why work at the university in question is essential to the project and how such a visit will enhance the quality of the thesis or dissertation;
3. an official university transcript (in countries where it cannot be obtained, a letter from the registrar is required);
4. a letter of support from the student's thesis/dissertation supervisor;
5. a copy of the letter from the faculty member in a Canadian university indicating his/her willingness to act as the student's academic sponsor
Criteria:
Successful applicants will be selected according to the following criteria:
1. the clarity of the proposal and its methodology;
2. the proposal's potential contribution to knowledge and/or to its field;
3. the likehood of the project's being accomplished during the period of the award;
4. the demonstrated need for the research to be carried out in Canada;
5. the strength of the letter of support;
6. the past academic awards as demonstrated by transcripts, awards, and distinctions.
N.B. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Selection:
The nominations will be evaluated and ranked, and successful candidates selected by an adjudicatory board appointed by the International Council for Canadian Studies. A brief rationale will be provided for unsuccessful applications. Decisions are not appealable.
Note: It will be the responsibility of each national association to ensure that all those who agree to be an academic sponsor are informed in writing of the success or failure of each applicant in obtaining the scholarship. Upon the student's return, he/she will file a written report to the ICCS, outlining what was accomplished during the tenure of the scholarship.

Number and Value of Scholarships:
• Ten (10) awards per year
• Up to Cdn$3,500 for all expenses. Smaller awards may be made.
NOTE: Some Canadian universities have generously agreed to offer a Canadian Studies Institutional Support Award of Cdn$1,500 to an awardee who has chosen to do his/her research on their campus.

Deadline for Applications:
• December 31st of each year
All applications must be submitted to the ICCS in Ottawa by December 31st. Please send a completed form, along with all required supporting documents, well before this date to the attention of the President of the appropriate Canadian Studies association.
