Canadian Studies Centers
In order to promote Canadian studies in China, and strengthen the cooperation among Canadianists, Canadidan studies centre, Fujian Normal University will organize nationwide symposium on Canadian American Relations since the WWII.<BR>The symposium is going to include three panel discussion topics:1) Canada and North American Free Trade Area; 2) Americanization in Canada; 3) Important issues in Canadian-American relations. The symposium will be held from 15 to 17 of June, 2007 (15 of June is for registration) at Canadian Studies Centre, Cangshan campus of Fujian Normal University. The participants will pay their travell costs themselves while room and board will be covered by organizer of the symposium. Guangdong has been the overall experiential zone for the opening and reform policy in China; it has taken the lead in market economy and in economic and social development. To meet this situation, the Center for Canadian Studies in Guangdong University of Foreign Studies was funded in 1989.
At beginning, the center had only 9 members. Supported and encouraged by the leaders of GDUFS and the Canadian Embassy in China, more and more scholars have joined the center, under the center, there’s a Quebec Studies Group consisting of French teachers. It has played a more and more important role in the field of Canadian Studies in Guangdong. Now it has 24 members, all of them are English, French or economic lecturers or professors; professors occupied 66% of the total. The former and present presidents are members of the center. Founded by Canadian government, 18 members went Canada to have the academic tours or studied relevant courses, some of our members even paid academic visits to Canada for 3 or 4 times. After its establishment, the center had a series of activities and did a quite good job, such as:
1. It published a research magazine Prospective in Canada from 1990 to 1996, 11 issues in all with publications of more than 100 articles on Canadian studies. Some of the articles were republished by other magazines. Scholars from Guangdong, Inner Mongolia, Jinin Province, Shanxi Province, Hubei Province, Sichuan Province, Jiangsu Province, Fujian Province, and Beijing City made the contributions to this magazine. The magazine contained the following columns: Canadian Languages and Education, History, Culture and Economy of Canada, Canadian Politics and Society, Sino-Canada Exchanges, Chinese Community in Canada. It had been popular in the circle of Canadian Studies. It stopped publishing in 1997 because of the financial difficulties.
2. The center held several seminars since its founding. The topics of the seminars were: Canadian Studies in Guangdong; Personal Experience in Canada; Multiculturalism in Canada; Chinese Community in Canada; Higher Education in Canada, Sino-Canadian cooperation in service trade, etc. Participants to the seminars were mainly from universities, research institutions, and news agencies in Guangdong.
3. The center sponsored series of lectures and consulting activities for those who were going to study, work, and immigrate to Canada.
4. The center held 5 translation contests of Canadian literature publications among the students in GDUFS. The last one was held in 2003 among all postgraduates in GDUFS, which was supported by the Canadian General Consulate in Guangzhou. After each contest, teachers gave winners prizes and published a collection of winners’ translations.
5. Most of the center’s members have been actively in Canadian studies. From 1989 till present, they published three books (i.e. Bilingual Education in Canada by professors He Ziran and Yu Yaonan; Selected Poems of Quebec by Prof. Chen Yirong; Chinese Community in Canada by Prof. Mo Xuqiang and Prof. Zhu Jiancheng) and about 140 articles.
6. The center has established close relations with nearly all the centers for Canadian studies in China and some institutions abroad. We have had the information and personal exchanges with those centers and institutions.
7. The center has undertaken a series of teaching activities and lectures related to Canadian studies. Since most of its members are teachers, they have taken advantages of their research fruits and materials gained from Canada to innovate teaching content and textbooks. Some member even designed and produced slide-shows or VCD about Canadian society, customs and habits, arts and education to serve the students.
8. Suggested by the center, our university offers a MA in Canadian Literature. We also teach courses about “Canadian Literature”.

The unveiling ceremony of the Canadian Studies Centre in the School of English and International Studies, Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), and the opening ceremony of the Canadian Cultural Festival were held on May 9, 2006. Guests of Honour included His Excellency Robert Wright (Canadian Ambassador to China), Professor HAO Ping (President of BFSU), Professor JIN Li (Vice-President of BFSU), Mr. MEI Ping (Former Chinese Ambassador to Canada), Ms. LI Bing (Deputy Director of State Administration for Foreign Experts’ Affairs), Ms. WANG Li (Academic Relations Officer, Embassy of Canada in Beijing) and Canadianists from some other research institutions in China. Ambassador Robert Wright, President HAO Ping, Ambassador MEI Ping and Professor GONG Yan, Director of Canadian Studies Centre of BFSU delivered speeches at the ceremonies. Books donated by the Library Support Programme were presented by Ambassador Robert Wright to the Centre. After the ceremonies, guests of honour were accompanied by the hosts to the Canadian Photo Exhibit, which was part of the Canadian Cultural Festival, and later to the newly-decorated office of the Canadian Studies Centre in the School of English and International Studies.
Sponsored by the Canadian Embassy in Beijing and the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Canada, the Canadian Cultural Festival was the first of its kind being held in BFSU. During the 9-day festival, the following events were organized: Canadian Film Nights, Canadian Photo Exhibit, Lecture on Canadian Higher Education, Ambassador Forum: “Sino-Canadian Relationship in a Diplomat’s Eyes” and Canadian Quiz Competition.
The Cultural Festival successfully enhanced understanding of Canadian culture and people. Students were actively involved in these events and many claimed have developed an academic interest in the study and research of Canada as a result of this exposure to Canadian culture.

个人简历
祖籍浙江宁波，1954年生于广州，后移居湖南衡阳。湖南大学外国语言文学系语言学
与应用语言学研究生毕业，并且获得美国纽约大学昆斯学院颁发的英语教学硕士证书。1988
年研究生毕业后到燕山大学外语系工作，担任英语专业的主要课程的教学。曾任燕山大学外
语系英语专业教研室主任、副教授。1998年到北京广播学院国际传播学院工作，担任过英语
播音、国际新闻、非通用语和英语等专业的英语精读、英语泛读、高级英语、英语语言学、
英语速记等课程的教学。发表了有关语言、传媒、跨文化交际、翻译、英语教学等方面的论
文多篇。主编出版了11部编著。

Main Activities: Hosted enlarged Session of 5th Council of Association for Canadian Studies in China in 1991 and 8th Biannual Conference of the ACSC in 1998 at Shandong University (Weihai Branch).
Hold a seminar on history and Sino-Canadian relations in 1997. Organized a workshop entitled "Academic Workshop on James Mellon Menzies" in 2000 to celebrate the 30 years' anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between China and Canada.
Applied Programmes: The books listed above were published with Publishing Supporting Grant from Canadian Embassy. We were covered several times by Library Supporting Programme established by Canadian Embassy
Foreign Academic Exchange: Eight members conducted research at Canadian universities under the CCSEP and seven ones visited Canadian academic institutions as the recipients of SACS. Three members made further study at Canadian university supported by other financial resources. Some Canadian scholars from York University, University of New Brownswick and Canadian Archives were invited to give lectures at our center.
Linkages with Canadian Universities: Correspondence with professors of University of British Colombia, Queen's University, University of New Brownswick, York University, University of Toronto and Regina University etc.
