(A Report on the Trip to Canada by Mr. Wei Guo)
Mr. Wei Guo at awarding ceremony
(Ms Marissa Cameron, Advisor of Administration and Events)和茱莉亚女士(Ms Julia)。
Downtown Vancouver
Nancy Johnston, Acting Associate VP Students and International, Senior Director, Learning and Retention, Student Services, Ms Carolyn Hanna, Acting Director, SFU International, International Student Advisor
Mr. Bert Annear, Senior Officer, Graduate Admissions and Records, Office of the Registrar and Enrollment Services, Ms. Nicola LaMorte, Advisor, International and Exchange Student Services见了面。

As the winner of the National English Speaking Contest: Development through sports: Canada and China, I was sponsored by CTC (Canadian Tourism Commission) for a one-week visit to Canada, including traveling to Vancouver, Victoria and Whistler from September 6th to 13th, 2008. I made this visit in order to better understand Canada, its culture, and Canadian values of inclusiveness, to obtain knowledge on how Canada prepares for 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. The visit fell into three categories: sports, culture and education. The following is a brief timetable for this visit:
September 6th: Departure for Vancouver from Beijing, visiting a local Chinese family, arriving in Vancouver and check in hotel.
September 7th: Culture sites experience: walking on Robson Street, visiting Gas town, China Town and Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, visiting Science World, enjoying night scene from Vancouver Lookout tower.
September 8th: Tour for Vancouver Winter Olympic Games Venues, meeting with VANOC (Vancouver Organizing Committee for 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games), visiting Simon Frazer University.
September 9th: Visiting University of British Colombia, taking part in students activity in Simon Frazer University.
September 10th: Visiting Whistler, riding bicycle along English Bay and Stanley Park.
September 11th: Traveling to Victoria, visiting University of Victoria, visiting BC Legislative Building in Victoria, staying one night in Victoria.
September 12th: Whale watching, visiting Butchart Garden, traveling back to Vancouver.
September 13th: Departure for Beijing from Vancouver.
In the field of sports, visiting sports venues of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games and VANOC office was enjoyable and impressive. The Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic village is located on Vancouver Downtown area near BC Stadium, which will be the place for 2010 Games Opening and Closing ceremony. The village will be accommodation for athletes and team officials for the Winter Games. It is now under construction and will be developed into a model sustainable community with market and non-market housing, parkland and office and shopping complexes after the Games, benefiting people living in the area. The UBC Winter Sports Centre lies in UBC campus, which will be the place for men’s ice hockey event and women’s ice hockey event. It is similar that after the game the venue will become a recreational and high-performance multi-sport legacy facility. Richmond Oval is a most exciting place, which is located on the banks of the Frazer River, 25 minutes south of the Olympic Village in downtown Vancouver. More than ten sports events of speed skating will take place here. It is one of the biggest venues for the Olympic Games. Advanced technologies are used to construct this sport venue. Especially, environmental friendly materials as well as recycled materials are chosen to build the facility, promoting a concept of emery saving and environment protection. The venue is designed with great flexibility, allowing a variety of sport and community functions after Ilanaaq on the top of Whistler Mountain
the Game.
After a one-hour tour of these sports venues, a meeting with VANOC was arranged. I met with Mr. Stephen Fitzgerald, Director of Workforce Operations, Ms Marissa Cameron, Advisor of Administration and Events and Ms Julia, staff of the organizing committee. The meeting was mainly about the Volunteer Recruitment Campaigns for the Games. 25,000 volunteers are needed for the Games. The recruitment began in February this year and follows three steps: group interview, individual interview and training. Language competence was a considerable skill for people applying for Vancouver Games volunteer. The meeting concluded at noon.
The trip to Whistler also contributed to the exploration of sports in Canada. It took about two and a half hours to travel from Vancouver to Whistler. I walked through whistler village and took Gondola to the top of Whistler Mountain, which was a good place to see some venues for skiing and skating. Blue lakes, white snow, beautiful sunshine and green forests with a stone-made Ilanaaq on the top of the mountain, it was a great joy to visit such a fascinating place.
People in Vancouver love sports very much. During a walk near BC Stadium, I saw many people jogging, riding bicycles, playing Frisbee or canoeing along the sea coast near by. The Olympic Games would be a good opportunity to promote the development of sports facilities, which will benefit local people, and a golden chance for people to share with others about their joy and aspiration to sports.
In the field culture, tourism in particular, I have visited some historical and cultural cites in Vancouver as well as in Victoria. Culture experience began in Vancouver downtown area. Gas town is a good place to enjoy a traditional street scene of the city, with many shops for souvenirs and restaurant. The gas town steam clock locates at the middle of the area. It is considered to be one the first steam powered clock. Created for the enjoyment of everyone, the live steam winds the weights and blows the whistles every 4.5 minutes, recalling the memories and experiences in the industrial age.
China town is located near Gas town and it is believed to be one of the biggest ones in North America. It fully embodies the traditional architecture and spirit of China. There were many historical sites: Vancouver Chinatown Millennium Gate, China Gate, Chinese Culture Centre Museum & Archives, the Monument of Canadian Chinese and Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Garden.
Walking through China Town and along the sea coast I
BC legislative Building, Victoria was at the Science World of Vancouver. It is a place for promoting knowledge of science for adults and kids. People could find solutions for a better future through the exploration of topical issues such as transportation, electricity, water consumption and waster disposal, and learn how our everyday choices affect the world around us. Science World is place of modern culture in Vancouver. After night fell, Vancouver Lookout Tower is a good place to go. Spending one hour in the tower enabled me to enjoy one of the most beautiful cities in the world from a magnificent 360 viewpoint high about ground level.
I spent two days visiting Victoria, because it took half a day travel from Vancouver one way. Victoria is a beautiful city locates in the south part of Vancouver Island, bordering with Washington State of United States. It is capital of Province of British Columbia. BC Legislative Building is near the sea. It is a building fully embodies traditional English Style of architecture. A statue of Queen Victoria stands in the centre of the squire in front of the building. On the left side of it was the Royal BC Museum and Victoria Conference Centre, which is also an old British Style Building with green roof like many other similar buildings in different placed of this country. It was under repairing the time when I visited. Whale watching is very famous in Victoria, for I met some American tourist traveled there just for this pleasant and exciting trip. It took around three hours to finish a whale watching trip. And I did see whales reaching out from the sea to breath.
In the afternoon, I traveled to visit Butchart Gardens which was between Victorian Downtown and Ferry Terminal Swartz Bay, connecting Victoria and Vancouver. Butchart Gardens was once private estate for family: Robert and Junnie Butchart. Today, it is one of most famous gardens in Vancouver Island. Twenty-two hectares of breathtaking gardens on the fifty-three hectare estate are visited by more than a million people each year. There are many kinds of beautiful flowers in the gardens. Many plants either commonly used in gardens or those attracting the most attention could be found.
Historic sites in Vancouver and Victoria impressed me very much. It was a memorable experience visiting so many wonderful places with a culture which was so different from the one I am in. This refreshing trip rewarded me with Canadian culture and values of inclusiveness, which will be beneficial to me as an English major student to better understand Canada.
In the field of education, there were three prestigious universities on my visiting schedule: UBC (University of British Columbia), UVic (University of Victoria) and SFU (Simon Frazer University). The arrangement was made for a better and personal understanding of higher education in Canada.
I visited Simon Frazer University main campus on the top of the Burnaby Mountain and met with Dr. Nancy Johnston, Acting Associate VP Students and International, Senior Director, Learning and Retention, Student Services, Ms Carolyn Hanna, Acting Director, SFU International, International Student Advisor and Ms Yan Jin, Manager, China Program Development. It enabled me to have a basic understanding to this beautiful school. Two Student Volunteer Mentors Kanika Prof. Alison Bailey and me, UBC, Vancouver
and Aness showed me around the campus. I took part in a student activity organized to bring together volunteer mentors and international students in an evening filled with fun, food and games. It was an interesting experience for students from different countries talked and cooperated with each other in games. The understanding between people with different culture background had been increased.
The trip to UBC was another scene. UBC had a very big campus. There were a lot of places to visit: UBC book store, UBC Library, Rose Garden, Asia Studies Centre and Asian Library. I met with Dr. Alison Bailey, Director of the Chinese Research Centre at lunch. We had a talk about the Beijing Olympics. She believed that China really had very impressive performance in the Games. Later on, another talking was arranged between me and Ms Wang Yajing, president of CSSA (Chinese Students and Scholars Association). She graduated from UBC this July. She told me that all the students there from China felt very exciting and proud about the Beijing Olympics. A lot of them were too excited to hold back tears on the account of the proud for the motherland.
University of Victoria is located at the east side of Victoria downtown area. It has around 18,000 students. Mr. David Wang, Office of International Affairs, Mr. Bert Annear, Senior Officer, Graduate Admissions and Records, Office of the Registrar and Enrollment Services, Ms. Nicola LaMorte, Advisor, International and Exchange Student Services met with me on campus. We had a talk about some graduate programs and service provided by international exchange student services. After lunch, a student volunteer accompanied me for a campus tour. The very thing impressive to me was the huge number of bunny rabbits staying on campus, a good sign and nice evidence of environmental protection in the area. The tour covered the school library, gym, dormitory, lecture hall and self-study area.
Visits to these three universities gave me a brief but genuine understanding of Canadian higher education system which consists of undergraduate and graduate programs. Students there spent a lot of time in after-class reading and learning, for learning and discussion in self-studies area. Reading books on bus were frequently notices. There were also many students’ activities. In UBC and SFU, I witnessed a lot of students clubs promoting themselves, because the time when I was there happened to be the beginning of a new semester and all the clubs wanted to recruit new members. Volunteering was very popular. All the students I met there had had volunteering experience. Showing me around the campus by a student was one of their volunteer programs.
Vancouver is a beautiful city and people in Vancouver were very friendly. I got lost several times on streets, standing and wandering with a city map. For many times, people just came to me and asked if I need some help. The visit to Canada was short, but it enriched my experience and was helpful for me to understand development through sports between Canada and China as well as Canadian culture and higher education. I really appreciate that I was given such a great opportunity to visit Canada. At the same time I also feel grateful for all the people, people in Canadian Embassy, people in ACSC, and people far there in Canada, who helped to bring the visit into reality. The memory is beautiful and the experience will sure be shared among many students in my school, and people at large whom I know and whom I do not know.
