1. 加中数字文化遗产研讨会在北京召开（Canada-China Digital Heritage Symposium: Securing the Intangible Through the Virtua）

2008年 8月2-3日，由加拿大文化部文化信息司主办，加拿大驻华大使馆、加拿大国家文明博物馆和渥太华大学协办的“加中数字文化遗产研讨会”在北京规划展览馆“不列颠哥伦比亚省--加拿大厅”召开。会议的主题是“通过虚拟技术确保非物质文化遗产保护”，旨在讨论近年来加拿大和中国文化保护和传播的发展趋势，交流两国非物质文化保护及传播的科学技术和管理经验，具体探讨合作的可能性及途径。加拿大是2008年北京奥运会的积极参与者和2010年冬季奥运会的主办者。在北京奥运会期间，加拿大政府在北京规划展览馆设立了介绍加拿大历史文化的 “加拿大厅”。加拿大国家文明博物馆在北京皇城艺术馆举办了 “加拿大原住民” 展览。与之相应，加拿大文化部在北京举办数字文化遗产研讨会,探讨非物质文化保护的技术和管理，以促进与中国的文化学术交流。
在8月2日上午的开幕式上，加拿大驻华大使馆公共事务参赞高柏灵（Patrice Cousineau）先生、中国文化部非物质文化遗产司司长屈盛瑞先生、加拿大奥运会嘉宾特使大山(Mark Roswell)先生、加拿大文化部代表李强博士和罗恩·霍里克（Lorne Todd Holyoak）分别致辞。
高柏灵参赞代表加拿大驻华大使馆欢迎与会人员，他在致辞中充分肯定了研讨会召开的重要意义, 在深化加拿大和中国在文化艺术合作方面起到了积极的推动作用。高柏灵参赞说，研讨会在很多方面例证了加拿大政府和不列颠哥伦比亚省在2008年这个历史性的奥运年在北京建立“加拿大展厅”的良好愿望和目标。此展厅为加拿大商业和文化推广提供了聚会地点，加中两国人民可以在此相聚、互动和相互学习。加拿大驻华大使馆从一开始就参与了展厅的筹建。高柏灵参赞指出，使馆还支持加中双边的文化交流活动，比如促成了“加中文化协议”和“加中电影合作生产协议”的签订，使过去几年加中之间开展了许多成功的文化交流活动。截止目前，其中最重要的一件事，就是促成了加拿大国家文明博物馆和中国国家博物馆的长期合作。昨天（2008年8月1日），加拿大国家文明博物馆在北京皇城艺术馆举办了 “加拿大原住民的杰作展览”。先前（2007年5月至10月），“中国国家博物馆馆藏展”在加拿大举行了同样成功的展览。高柏灵参赞介绍说，最近加中之间的文化交流活动频繁活跃，包括：（1）位于多伦多的皇家安大略博物馆目前在中国正在进行一系列的馆藏研究项目，最近接待了由中共中央宣传部副部长翟卫华先生和国家文物局副局长张柏先生率领的中国政府代表团。皇家安大略博物馆和位于卡尔加里市格伦鲍博物馆，与陕西文化遗产促进中心正在商谈把中国馆藏品带到加拿大进行展出的可能性。（2）加拿大Arius3D科技公司也出席了本次数字文化遗产研讨会，为了在文化遗产部门推广加拿大的三维激光扫描技术，Arius3D准备成立全外资的北京分公司。作为该计划的一部分，Arius3D正在商谈在北京成立三维激光扫描中心，这将是首家在中国面向博物馆和文化遗产部门的类似机构。（3）加拿大博物馆协会同时也加强了与中国同行的现存关系。该协会代表加拿大国际文化基金会执行加中博物馆之间的交流项目，此项目是与中国人民友好协会所签订的备忘录的一部分。截止目前，加拿大博物馆协会已经成功组织了三个交流项目，最近的一次是2007年秋天中国的博物馆专家访问了加拿大。2008年12月，加拿大博物馆协会代表团将访问中国。（4）许多与中国业已建立了广泛关系的加拿大高校也参加了研讨会，如凯波布兰顿大学（Cape Breton University）即为其中之一。凯波布兰顿大学最近与中国国家发展与改革委员会国际合作中心签订了合作协定，在教育、产业和政府治理方面发展长期合作关系，双方已经建立了六项交流项目，凯波布兰顿大学将在北京设立办事处来负责与国家发改委之间招募学员和国际合作交流等活动。
开幕式后，加拿大文化部文化信息司司长格伯利奥·玻莱丝（Gabrielle Blais）女士、渥太华大学文化交流研究中心主任马丽·古登（Marie-Francise Guedon）教授分别作了“加拿大博物馆数据库和文化信息网络的建立”、“什么是非物质文化”的主题发言。渥太华大学文化交流研究中心李强博士与加拿大文化部战略政策和管理司罗恩·霍里克（Lorne Todd Holyoak）博士联合主持了研讨会。
在两天的会议期间，加中两国学者和官员交流了两国非物质文化保护及传播的科学技术和管理经验，探讨了两国未来合作的机制和在会上就加拿大范例发言的加拿大代表有：加拿大      Remarks on Behalf the Canadian Embassy

8月3日下午，研讨会在圆满完成各项议程后举行了闭幕式，加拿大文化部文化信息司司长格伯利奥·玻莱丝（Gabrielle Blais）女士致闭幕辞，她说，此次研讨会为两国博物馆和文化保护的专家和学者提供一个彼此学习和交流合作的良好机会，在过去两天各大博物馆和文化保护的专家学者聚集一堂，分享他们在运用数字技术保护非物质文遗产方面的经验。她代表加拿大政府感谢中加两国与会人员为此次研讨会的成功举办所作的贡献。渥太华大学文化交流研究中心李强博士、加拿大文化部战略政策和管理司罗恩·霍里克（Lorne Todd Holyoak）博士也在闭幕式上发言，希望今后进一步加强两国文化艺术之间的合作。
共有60余人参加了会议，其中加拿大20余人，来自加拿大文化遗产部、加拿大国家文明博物馆、渥太华大学、不列颠哥伦比亚大学、拉瓦尔大学等机构的博物馆和文化保护部门。中国参会人员40余人来自文化部、国家文物局、国家民族事务委员会、国家博物馆、中国文学艺术界联合会（中国文联）、中国民间文艺家协会、中国艺术研究院、北京皇城艺术馆、北京民族文化宫、陕西历史博物馆、甘肃省博物馆、广西民族博物馆、云南省博物馆、云南民族博物馆、北京舞蹈学院、中国社会科学院民族学与人类学研究所、中国社会科学院少数民族文学研究所、上海社会科学院、北京大学、兰州大学、云南民族大学、云南大学等。会议期间，与会代表还参观了正在北京皇城艺术馆展出的“加拿大原住民展览”，和在北京规划展览馆展出的“不列颠哥伦比亚--加拿大厅”。

A special conference entitled “Canada-China Digital Heritage Symposium: Securing the Intangible Through the Virtual,” which co-organized by the Department of Canadian Heritage, Canadian Embassy in Beijing, Canadian Museum of Civilization, the University of Ottawa on August 2 and 3, 2008, at the BC-Canada Pavilion in the Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall in Beijing, China. This symposium addressed recent developments in the    
………..Canada-China Digital Heritage Symposium        field of  cultural heritage preservation and dissemination, focused on how heritage professionals and academics, in Canada and China, are using information and communication technology to preserve, to promote and to make accessible intangible cultural heritage.
This event was opened by officials from both countries including Mr. Patrice Cousineau, Counsellor and Head of Public Affairs at Canadian Embassy, Mr. QU Shengrui, Director General, Division of Intangible Cultural Heritage, State Ministry of Culture China. Two keynote speeches by Ms. Gabrielle Blais, Director General, Department of Canadian Heritage “Mobilizing Innovation at Canada’s Heritage Institutions”, and Dr. Marie Françoise Guédon, Director of Interculture Centre, University of Ottawa “What is Intangible Culture?”. The Moderators of this smposium are Dr. LI Qiang, University of Ottawa, and Dr. Lorne Holyoak, Department of Canadian Heritage. Mr. Mark Rowswell (Dashan) ，the Goodwill Ambassador for the B.C.-Canada Pavilion welcomed Chinese participants.
On behalf of the Embassy of Canada in China, in his opening remarks, Mr. Cousineau pointed out that this Canada-China Digital Heritage Symposium exemplifies, in many ways, the ideals and goals that guided the Governments of Canada and British Columbia’s decision to establish this pavilion during this historic Olympic year in China's capital city. The pavilion provides a venue for Canadian business and cultural promotion, a place where Chinese and Canadians can meet, interact and learn from each other. The Embassy has been involved from the beginning in the establishment of the Pavilion. We are also significantly involved in supporting Canada-China cultural exchanges through bilateral cultural instruments such as the Canada-China Cultural Agreement and the Canada-China Film Co-Production Agreement, pursuant to which many successful initiatives in have been undertaken over the last several years. One of the most successful one to date is the longstanding cooperation between the Canadian Museum of Civilisation and the National Museum of China, cooperation which saw the opening yesterday of a remarkable exhibition on Canadian First Nations masterworks at the Beijing Art Museum of Imperial City, following an equally successful exhibition of Chinese artefacts in Canada. Counsellor Cousineau cited a few examples of Canada-China exchange activities recently. The Royal Ontario Museum, in Toronto, has a number of ongoing curatorial research projects taking place in China, and recently hosted a senior Chinese government delegation led by Mr. Zhai Weihua, Vice-Minister of the Publicity Department, and Mr. Zhang Bai, Deputy Director-General of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage. Currently, the Royal Ontario Museum and the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, together with the Shaanxi Cultural Heritage Promotion Centre, are exploring the possibility of bringing an exhibition from China to Canada. Arius3D, an innovative Canadian company also present at this symposium, is setting up a wholly-owned foreign company in Beijing for promoting Canadian 3D scanning technologies in the cultural heritage sector. The Canadian Museums Association is also deepening existing ties with China. The Association administers Canada-China exchange projects on behalf of the "Canadian Fund for International Understanding through Culture". Three exchanges have been organized to date, the latest having taken place last fall when Chinese museologists visited Canada. This coming December, the next Canadian delegation will be coming to China. A number of Canadian universities with extensive connections in China are represented at this symposium. One example is Cape Breton University, which has just signed a cooperative agreement with the International Cooperation Center of the National Development and Reform Commission in China to develop a long-term relationship for educational, industrial and governmental programs. The university has already had six official exchanges with the commission, and will now open a Cape Breton University Beijing Cooperation Office to support recruitment, international partnerships and exchanges between the two institutions. On a conclusion, Mr. Cousineau believed that this Canada-China Digital Heritage Symposium is a positive step in deepening Canada and China’s cooperation on matters of arts and culture, he encouraged participants to take full advantage of this opportunity to network and promote common objectives.

Chinese scholars exchanged research findings with Canadian Professors in the field of intangible cultural heritage in China. The Chinese presentations including Dr. Fang Lili, Chinese National Academy of Arts “Documenting Intangible Culture in West China: A National Study Report”, Dr. Bai Gengshen, Chinese National Federation of Artists “Chinese Efforts for Preserving Intangible Culture”, Qin Pu, Director General of Cultural Heritage Division, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (Province) and Head of Guangxi Provincial Museum of Nationalities “Visual Museums and Aboriginal Cultural Museums in Guangxi”, Wang Hong Gang, Professor, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences “Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Manchu People in Northeast China”, etc.
Over 60 participants attended this event, 20 of which came from Canada including Canadian Heritage Information Network Department of Canadian Heritage, Canadian Museum of Civilization, Canadian Museum Association, Glenbow Museum, UBC Museum of Anthropology, Royal Ontario Museum, Arius3D Inc, Université Laval, Cape Breton University, Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador. 1）香港研讨会
2007年4月3日，曹勇衡参加了在香港利景酒店(Charter Hotel)进行的亚太地区加拿大研究组织研究生研讨会，与来自中国大陆地区、台湾地区、日本、韩国、印度、澳大利亚等国家和地区的教授和研究生们进行了加拿大研究方面的交流，并在会上宣读了自己的论文 "进入21世纪后加拿大的人口状况以及未来的发展趋势"。该论文已被收入由亚太加研会轮值主席Stewart Gill教授主编的论文集New Dimensions in Canadian Studies Asia Pacific  Perspectives.(New Delhi: Prestige  2008. pp. 177-188. ISBN 81-7851-039-1)
2）加拿大研究教师座谈会暨学生讲座举行
    6月7日下午，加拿大驻沪领事馆的Mark Neighbor先生来到上海交通大学加拿大研究中心，召开了关于加拿大研究的教师座谈会。座谈会由上海交大加拿大研究中心主任俞理明教授主持，来自外国语学院、安泰经济与管理学院、人文学院和国际教育学院的师生参与了此次座谈会。Neighbor先生为大家介绍了目前加拿大研究方面比较热门的研究领域和话题，并介绍了加拿大政府和中国加拿大研究中心在加拿大研究方面的学术交流项目和资助项目。最后，Neighbor先生回答了来自各个学院的师生所提出的加拿大研究信息搜索、中加学校项目交流、加拿大研究方向等方面的问题，大家反映热烈。
　　同日傍晚，Neighbor先生在图书馆演讲厅为交大的同学们带来了一场主题为“Special Olympics，Today & Yesterday”的专题讲座。在讲座中，Neighbor先生为同学们讲述了特殊奥林匹克运动会的历史、发展与现在，并介绍了作为来自第一届特奥会的举办地的加拿大为残障人士提供的各种便利措施以及加拿大对于这一特殊群体的重视程度，同时对最新一届特奥会的承办地上海做出很大期许。在讲座后半阶段，交大的同学们纷纷就特奥会志愿者活动、上海与加拿大的残障设施比较等等向Mark先生提问。
此外，为鼓励上海交大加拿大研究中心在加拿大研究方面所作的杰出工作，加拿大领馆这次向中心赠送了总额约1000美元的30本加拿大原版图书，主要包括加拿大文化、历史和加拿大著名作家Nino Ricci、Margaret Laurence等人的佳作，赠书受到加拿大研究中心和外国语学院师生的欢迎。
3）《加拿大名城风情丛书》和《长跑与人生》出版
完成《加拿大名城风情丛书》的编写和出版。继《多伦多——安大略湖畔的翡翠》和《温哥华——加拿大太平洋海岸上的一颗璀璨明珠》两本书由上海交通大学出版社出版后，今年3月又出版了《魁北克市—北美大陆的巴黎》, 《渥太华---里多运河上的一片枫叶》, 《蒙特利尔—圣劳伦斯河上的法国魅力》。同时，因为《多伦多》和《温哥华》两本书从经济、社会、文化、教育、旅游等各方面详细介绍了多伦多和温哥华两个城市，图文并茂，得到了读者的喜爱，因此已经售完，开始重新印刷。准备在今年9月开一个新书发布会。
除《加拿大名城风情丛书》外，上海交通大学加拿大研究中心还编写和出版了《长跑与人生：一个人的梦想，整个世界的希望》一书，书中着重宣扬了加拿大的民族英雄Terry Fox的优秀事迹，并全方位地向中国读者介绍了Terry Fox长跑的意义和在世界上产生的巨大而久远的影响
4） 留学加拿大信息发布会
2007年7月28日，一场加拿大学校宣讲会在上海交通大学浩然科技大厦举行。本次宣讲会加拿大驻沪领事馆和上海交大加拿大研究中心联合主办。宣讲会针对有打算去加拿大留学或进修的师生及学生家长，为大家详细讲述了加拿大的各大学、教育、留学政策等，并详尽回答了听众提出的许多问题，取得了良好的效果。
5）  上海交通大学加拿大研究中心的俞理明教授参加辽宁师范大学加拿大研究国际研讨会
9月15日至18日，辽宁师范大学加拿大研究中心举办了题为“加拿大和中国的多元文化”的国际研讨会。来自中国和加拿大各大学的30多名研究者共同参加了本次研讨会。在研讨会开幕式上来自上海交通大学加拿大研究中心的俞理明教授做了题为“加拿大的法语浸入教育和中国的英汉双语教学：比较，反思和展望”的主题发言，得到了热烈的反应。
6） 纽芬兰纪念大学的来访
2007年10月15日下午，来自加拿大纽芬兰纪念大学的Elizabeth Murphy付教授和她的博士生 Maria Angeles Rodriguez为外国语学院的师生们做了一场关于远程网络教学的讲座。Elizabeth就网络教学的开展、作用和实施方法等进行了详细的讲解。在讲解之后，外国语学院的师生与她们两个小时的时间里进行了热烈的讨论，直到讲座结束仍觉得意犹未尽。
7） Chris Greenshields先生参观上海交通大学加拿大研究中心
2007年１２月１３日上午９点半，加拿大外交和国际贸易部国际教育处处长Chris Greenshields先生在加拿大驻沪领事馆的公共事务官Nancy Xie(谢楠)的陪同下到上海交大加拿大研究中心进行访问，上海交大加拿大研究中心主任、外国语学院教授俞理明博士、外国语学院陆莹教授及安泰经济管理学院的黄丞老师热情接待了他们。在不大的中心办公室，俞理明教授和陆莹教授向来访者介绍了加拿大研究中心的运作情况，详细讲述了中心三年来所举办的活动和进行的项目，并展望了中心未来的计划和发展方向，Greenshields对中心所做的工作给予了高度赞扬。最后，俞理明教授向他们赠送了中心近三年的活动记录光盘。
8） 中加奥运全国英语演讲大赛”上海交大赛区决赛落幕
为进一步加深两国人民之间的相互了解，通过奥运这一纽带寻求共同发展，加拿大外交和国际贸易部及加拿大驻华使馆全力资助，联手中国加拿大研究会共同发起了“中加奥运全国英语演讲大赛”。上海交通大学赛区决赛于2月28日下午在闵行校区逸夫楼200号拉开帷幕.上海交通大学常务副校长叶取源,加拿大研究中心主任俞理明教授,外国 语学院副院长胡开宝出席了本次，并由Consul General Susan Gregson, Consul James Michael, 陶庆教授,陆荃教授,左晓岚教授等担任比赛评委。来自我校外国语学院及英语二专的十位同学，在初赛、复赛中过关斩将,成功晋级决赛,并展开了激烈地角逐。整个比赛过程激烈有序，每位参赛选手都 充分地展示了自己的风采，给广大的师生留下了深刻的印象。最终，英语系大三的杨子曼同学凭借自信沉着的表现和敏捷的思维，夺得头筹,并将代表上海交通大学 赴北京参加全国总决赛。此次还评出了2名二等奖,3名三等奖和4名四等奖。另外,此次比赛还吸引了Shanghai Daily (上海日报), 人民日报,环球时报,ICS等新闻媒介的关注, 经过广大师生的努力,此次活动圆满完成！
9） 2008年3月14日下午，加拿大新生代实力派作家Madeleine Thien 女士应上海国际文学节之邀，
来到了上海交通大学，以她最新作品《Certainty》为议题与来自上海交通大学的老师和同学们进行了一次有关“寻找定义”的对话。Madeleine Thien 女士向大家介绍了她的个人经历和她小说中所描述的战后生活、人性的勇敢及人生不断寻求的定义，并就加拿大文学、多元化社会等话题与在场的师生进行了广泛的讨论。本次讲座由上海交通大学加拿大研究中心、上海交通大学人文学院、以及加拿大驻沪总领事馆携手举办，加拿大驻沪总领事馆文化领事James Mitchell先生出席了讲座。

1．Hong Kong Seminar
On April 3, 2007, Mr. Cao Yongheng attended the Postgraduate Seminar organized by the Canadian Studies Association in Asia-Pacific Region. He read his paper titled ‘Canada’s Population Development Pattern in the 21st Century’ during the seminar and had academic exchange with professors and postgraduate students from Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, India, Australia, Israel and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region. His paper has been accepted and published in New Dimensions in Canadian Studies Asia Pacific Perspectives edited by Professor Stewart Gill and Dr. RK Dhawan. (New Delhi: Prestige  2008. pp. 177-188. 2. Faculty and students meetings on Canadian studies
On the afternoon of June 27, 2007, Mr. Mark Neighbour of the Consulate General of Canada in Shanghai had a forum with the faculty at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University who have interests in areas related to Canadian Studies. The forum was presided over by director of the Canadian Studies of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Faculty came from the Foreign Language School, the Antai Business and Management School, School of Humanities, and the School of International Education. At the forum Mr. Mark Neighbour gave a presentation on his view of what currently constituted "hot topics" in Canadian Studies. He also described the resources that the Canadian Government would offer to support such projects, including scholarships that are available for academics engaged in Canadian studies.
In the evening, he gave a presentation on “Special Olympics，Today & Yesterday” to the students of SJTU in the lecture hall of the Bao Yuegang Library. Mr. Neighbour talked about the past, the development and the present of the Special Olympics. He stressed that as the host of the first Special Olympics, the Canadian government attached great importance to the special needs of this special group of people and made a point of taking various special measures that would help make life easier for them. In the latter part of Mr. Neighbour’s lecture, SJTU students raised a number of questions ranging from application for volunteers for the Special Olympics to the comparison between facilities for the disabled in China and in Canada.
Finally, to encourage more and better work on Canadian Studies done by the Canadian Studies Centre of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the the Consulate General of Canada in Shanghai donated 30 books published in Canada at the value of 1000 USD dollars. These books cover Canadian culture, history, and works by Canadian celebrated writers such as Nino Ricci, Margaret Laurence. The book donation was accorded with a warm welcome by the Canadian Studies Centre and the faculty and students of the Foreign Language School.
3．Publication of “Canadian Major Cities Series” and “Running in Life: A Single Dream. A World of Hope””
We have completed the project of “The Canadian Major Cites Book Series“. Following the successful publication of “Toronto：The Emerald By Lake Ontario“ and “Vancouver: A Pearl on the Canadian Pacific Ocean”, the Canadian Studies Centre published “Quebec City: Paris on the Continent of North America”, “Montreal: A Gallic Charm on St. Lawrence River”, and “Ottawa: A Maple Leaf on the Rideau Canal”. In the meanwhile, as “Toronto” and “Vancouver” have provided a detailed account of the two major Canadian cities in the economic, social, cultural, educational, and tourist aspects, they have been very popular with the readers and out of stock.  They have just been revised and the new edition will come off press this year. A book launching ceremony in celebration of the publication of this five-book series is underway.
As well as the publication of “The Canadian Major Cites Book Series”, the Canadian Studies Centre of SJTU has also compiled and published “Running in Life: A Single Dream. A World of Hope”.  This book focuses on the glorious deeds of the Canadian national hero Terry Fox and has presented to the Chinese readers a panorama picture of the significance of the Terry Fox Run and its gigantic, enduring impact throughout the world.
4．Information Session on Canadian Universities
On July 28th, 2007, an information session on Canadian universities co-organized by the Consulate General of Canada in Shanghai and the Canadian Studies Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University was held in Haoran Building of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The information session was held for those Chinese students and teachers who intended to go to Canada for further education and students’ parents. A detailed introduction to the relevant universities, and educational policies in Canada was provided. Many students and their parents attended the seminar and asked questions on Canadian universities and education.
5. Professor Liming Yu attending the international seminar on Canadian studies at Liaoning Normal University
The international seminar on the theme of “Multiculturalism in Canada and China” was held by the Canadian Studies Center of Liaoning Normal University in Dalian from Sept 15th to 18th. . The seminar was co-sponsored by the Canadian Embassy and the Foreign Languages School of the LNU.
The seminar was attended by 30 scholars altogether, that is, 4 scholars from Canada and 26 scholars from 8 provinces, autonomous regions and major cities. A considerable number of them were young scholars who attended an international workshop for the first time. At the opening ceremony of this seminar, Professor Yu Liming, director of the Canadian Studies Center in Shanghai Jiao Tong University gave a keynote speech on the French Immersion Education in Canada and the English-Chinese Bilingual education in China: French Immersion Language Education in Canada and English-Chinese Bilingual Instruction in China: Comparison, Reflection and Prospects, which evoked a heated discussion by the researchers presented.
6. Visits from the Memorial University of Newfoundland
On October 15th, 2007, Professor Elizabeth Murphy and her PH.D. student Maria Angeles Rodriguez from the Memorial University of Newfoundland of Canada gave a lecture on web-based learning to the teachers and students in the College of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Prof. Murphy gave a detailed lecture on the functions, application and methods of technology-mediated second-language learning. The teachers and students were very interested in their topic and presented posed many questions to them and discussed problems on various aspects of web-based teaching and learning in the lecture of more than two hours.
7．Mr. Chris Greenshields visits the Canadian Studies Centre at SJTU    
On December 13th, 2007, Mr. Chris Greenshields, director of the International Bureau of Education of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, accompanied by Nancy Xie, the Media Relations and Public Affairs Officer of the Consulate General of Canada in Shanghai, visited the Canadian Studies Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Prof. Yu Liming, director of the Canadian Studies Center, Prof. Lu Ying in the college of Foreign Languages and Prof.. Huang Cheng in Antai College of Economics and Management of Shanghai Jiaotong University gave them a warm welcome and acquainted the Canadian guests with the activities and projects conducted by the center in the last few years and also the new proposals in the near future. Mr. Greenshields was impressed by all the work done by the Canadian Studies Center. Prof. Yu presented Mr. Greenshields a disc containing all the information and photos of the activities and projects of the center as a souvernier.
8. Speech Contest on “Development Through Sports: Canada and China”
Organized by the Canadian Studies Center of SJTU, the National English Speech Contest (Shanghai Jiao Tong University division) – Development Through Sports: Canada and China was successfully held on February, 28, 2008. Set to raise the public’s awareness of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, this event was sponsored by the Embassy of Canada in Beijing and Canadian Tourism Commission, coordinated by ACSC, and was organized in a dozen or so universities in different regions of China. Guests of honor presented at the final include Mr. Ye Quyuan, the Executive Vice president of SJTU, Mr. Hu kaibao, the assistant dean of School of Foreign Languages, Consul General Susan Gregson and Consul James Michael. As winners of the preliminary contest of English speaking and writing, 10 contestants gathered  in to compete for Speech Contest in SJTU. The Contest consists of two parts:  a prepared 10-minute speech on the topic of “Development Through Sports: Canada and China” and Q & As on both 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.  At last, Yang Ziman from the English Department won the first place and will go to Beijing for the final contest on behalf of SJTU.
The contest drew a large audience from SJTU and several major media agencies such as Shanghai Daily, People’s Daily and so on.
9. "In Search of Certainty": A Conversation with Canadian Novelist Madeleine Thien
On the afternoon of March 14, 2008, the noted New-generation Canadian novelist Ms. Madelein Thien visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University and had a dialogue on quest for definitions with the faculty and students of the university during the reading session of her newly-published novel “In Search of Certainty” as a part of the International Literature Festival held in Shanghai. Ms.Thien elaborated the myriad themes of the novel such as the people’s brave-do and their continuous quest for meaning in life during the post-WWII period. She also talked about her own life experience and exchanged views with her audience on a variety of issues such as Canadian literature and the diversity of culture.
This event was co-organized by the Canadian Studies Center and School of Humanities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Mr. James Mitchell, the cultural consul of the Canadian Consulate General in Shanghai, also attended this reading session.
