Improving Mutual Understanding and Forging Future Collaborations
Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (IEA/CASS), in partnership with the Policy Research Initiative Canada (PRI), the Canadian Embassy in Beijing, and the Organizing Committee for the 16th International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (ICAES 2008), have held a Canada-China symposium on Social Inclusion and Economic Development successfully on December 12-14, 2006 in Beijing. The objective of this conference is to enhance the mutual understanding between the two countries on social and economic policy issues in order to explore potential for further dialogue. This conference funded by Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
This important event is a high lever forum between Canada and China. In the opening ceremony, Mr. GAO Qian-li, Depute President of CASS, delivered the welcome remarks. Mr. Robert Wright, Ambassador of Canada to China, Ms. Susan Scotti, Assistant Deputy Minister, Human Resources and Social Development Canada, and Mr. ZHOU Ming-fu, Executive Deputy Chairman, the Organizing Committee for ICAES 2008, addressed their openning and congratulations remarks (both see the attachments).
The total participation is 70, of which 23 from Canada, some of them are prestigious scholars. Three keynote speakers had their presentations. Professor HAO Shi-yuan (CASS Member): Respect differences and tolerate diversities: Social Inclusion in Multi-ethnic countries, Professor Peter S. Li (University of Saskatchewan): Social Inclusion and Economic Well-Being: Contradictions of Demographic Imperatives and Immigration Discourse in Canada, Professor Don DeVoretz (Simon Fraser University): Canadians in Hong-Kong and the Rest of the World: Some Policy Implications.
During this conference, scholars and researchers from China and Canada have exchanged views on a number of topics, including: Ethno-Cultural Diversity, Migration Management, Economic Prosperity, Social Welfare Policies, Education and Poverty Alleviation, Environmental Policies.
In the closing ceremony, Dr. Jean Kunz from PRI, the organizer of this event in Canada, Professor DU Fachun from IEA/CASS, the organizer in China, both did a summary of this conference(See the attachment).
Canadian Embassy in Beijing hosted a farewell reception for all the participants, Mr. Phil Calvert, Minister of the Embassy, and Ms Susan Scotti, Assistant Deputy Minister, Human Resources and Social Development Canada, delivered the speeches to this successful Sino-Canana forum. Ms Rachael Bedlington, Counsellor, Public Affairs Section, Ms Wang Li, Academic Relations officer, did lot contributions to this event.
