Special Awards for Canadian Studies
(SACS)

The Special Awards for Canadian Studies (SACS) provides Chinese scholars with the opportunity to spend five weeks in Canada to visit Canadian educational institutions, exchange information with Canadian scholars, gather material related to Canadian Studies and to familiarize themselves with Canadian research methods and tools.  Upon their return to China, participants are expected to teach and/or integrate Canadian content in their courses and to eventually publish scholarly articles or books on Canadian issues.  We welcome promising young Chinese scholars, who are interested in the Canadian Studies, to apply for this program.

The award consists of a return ticket, domestic airfare tickets in Canada (up to 3 Canadian cities) and a stipend (app. CDN $ 4,800)  while in Canada.

1. Numbers: 15 Scholars/per year (The number of grants are subject to funding and may vary from one year to the next)

2. Duration: 5 weeks (The SACS scholars depart for Canada as a group in May 2005.)

3. Eligibility:

Qualified candidates:


• Full-time, permanent teaching or research staff at a recognized institution of higher education in mainland China with a commitment to Canadian Studies and/or in Canada-China Comparative Research in the following fields (in order of priority):

public policy analysis and public administration
public health policy and management
education (including education management and economics)
environmental protection
economics/finance
rule of law, human rights & good governance
journalism and media management
politics and history
literature, arts and culture

and other fields that reflect Canada’s comprehensive engagement with China


• Hold at least an undergraduate degree (requiring at least four years of full-time study)

• Are between 26 and 50 years of age


• An adequate written and spoken knowledge of either English or French

• Committed to contribute to the promotion of Canada through conducting joint research with Canadian counterparts or publishing books/scholarly articles or teaching courses on Canadian issues on their return

The following persons are NOT eligible:


• Persons who were granted SACS/CCSEP in the past three years
• Recent college graduates with less than three years work experience
• Chinese citizen with a Canadian Permanent Resident Card

4. How to Apply:

• Applicant must submit:

I.SACS application form (please fill in English or French and use A4                                                  size paper)    

II.2 recommendation letters (in English or French) from their own                               institution or a Canadian institution
                
III. Certificate from the working unit,  indicating the permission from their                                             institutions, which certify that the applicants are allowed to go to Canada                                         for the requested period of time.

            IV.  A business card

Note: The above materials are a complete application kit.  Applicants must                                provide 5 sets of the completed application kits when applying for SACS.
