Canada-Asia-Pacific Awards
[Formerly: Canada-Asia-Pacific Award in Canadian Studies (CAPA)]
This program is administered for Foreign Affairs Canada by the International Council for Canadian Studies.
1- Objective:
The Government of Canada is pleased to offer a Canadian Studies award to promote research activities in areas relevant to the bilateral and multilateral relationships between Canada and the countries of the Asia-Pacific Region.
2- Guidelines:
This award will support scholars in universities or research institutes in the Asia-Pacific Region to undertake short term research, including collaborative research, contributing to the understanding of bilateral and multilateral relations between Canada and the countries of the Asia-Pacific Region. The award will assist with direct costs related to the research project, and, when a research trip to Canada is warranted, will provide assistance towards international airfare and a weekly flat rate allowance for a period not exceeding five weeks.
3- Research Fields:
Awards may be granted for:
1. research projects related to Canada and Asia-Pacific relations, either with the region as a whole, or any part thereof. Topics will be within the areas of social sciences and the humanities, as well as some professional schools, such as business studies, economics, law, international relations, public administration, history, politics, sociology, geography, arts, literature, linguistics, linguistic duality, education, communications policy, media studies, planning, science policy, social administration, environmental studies, architecture, and other related fields;
2. interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary studies; or
comparative studies in which Canada represents a substantial part of the work, normally 50%.
4- Eligibility:
Awards will be available to scholars and researchers from:
Australia -- People's Republic of Bangladesh -- Brunei -- Kingdom of Cambodia -- People's Republic of China -- Hong Kong -- India -- Indonesia -- Japan -- Republic of Korea -- Malaysia -- Mongolia -- New Zealand -- Pakistan -- Republic of the Philippines -- Singapore -- Sri Lanka -- Taiwan -- Thailand -- Vietnam
Applicants must:
1. be full-time members of the academic staff of a recognized institution of higher education or equivalent degree-granting institution in the Asia-Pacific Region, or scholars at research and policy planning institutes who undertake significant Canadian bilateral and/or multilateral relations research projects;
2. hold a degree equivalent to a Master's or better;
3. have a working knowledge of either English or French.
Applicants must provide evidence of their interest in or involvement with Canada prior to the application. This may be demonstrated by courses they have already given, research they have undertaken, extra-mural activities, or membership in a local Association for Canadian Studies. (See past recipients...)
5- Value of Awards:
The Canada-Asia-Pacific Award will consist of a grant ranging from CAD $5,000 to $10,000, based on the analysis of the proposed budget needed to do the research. It is expected that more than one award will be offered annually. Successful candidates will not be able to make a new application until they demonstrate that they have fulfilled the terms and conditions of their previous award.
6- Terms and Conditions:
Through its administrative agent, the International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS), Foreign Affairs Canada will make grants to successful recipients under the following conditions:
1. the applicant will personally apply for an award and will carry out his/her own research, which is not part of contractual or commissioned research;
2. awards are granted for work to be carried out in either the applicant's place of residence and/or Canada, and are intended to assist in defraying only direct costs related to a project, including return travel to Canada and related expenses, rental of equipment (but not capital purchases), purchase of books and other materials, some secretarial services, and, possibly, some publishing costs; no provision is made for released time stipends nor for overhead costs to the institution;
3. the applicant will make all travel arrangements relating to the research project, including:
a. international travel;
b. visa (if needed);
c. accommodation and travel within Canada;
d. medical insurance while in Canada:
e. visit plans, including inter alia appointments with Canadian academics and other resources persons, access to libraries and other study centres, etc.;
4. as a result of the research undertaken under this award, the recipient will seek the publication of an article in a scholarly publication or a book edited in either his/her place of residence in the Asia-Pacific Region or in Canada. While not a condition of a grant, sharing of the results in other fora, such as conferences and seminars is encouraged;
5. two copies of the article as published or presented for publication will be sent to ICCS in Ottawa, along with a summary in English or French upon completion of the project, and no later than 18 months following the attribution of the grant.
6. the rights to the manuscript will remain the exclusive property of the researcher.

Then, if you have a FULL version of Adobe Acrobat, you will be able to fill in the .pdf form on your computer, SAVE it, print FIVE copies and send them to the High Commission, as indicated above. HOWEVER, if you only have the free Acrobat Reader, you will still be able to enter data on the form but will not be able to save it! (When you close the document in Reader, your inputted data is lost!) Your only option is to fill in the form, print SIX copies of it before closing Acrobat Reader, and send FIVE of them to the High Commission, as indicated above. (Of course, you can print only one copy and photocopy it!)
• Microsoft Word format: If you opt for this format, please ensure that you use the following font: Arial 10 pt, and that you follow the Insert Page Break instructions. Juries and administrators of the program will highly appreciate your kind attention to this matter.
Application forms must also include:
1. a written statement which confirms the applicant's eligibility and outlines his/her background, field(s) of specialization, and particular areas of interest;
2. a concise curriculum vitae, highlighting relevant teaching, research, and publications;
3. information regarding the applicant's ability in either of Canada's official languages (English and French);
4. a written statement from the applicant stating that he/she will conform to all of the Terms and Conditions as outlined above;
5. a concise research proposal (4 to 8 pages) which will:
a. identify the key issues or the main theoretical problems and the appropriate methodology of the research to be undertaken;
b. indicate clearly both the nature and the scope of the project's contribution to the literature in the chosen field and to the understanding of bilateral and multilateral relations between Canada and the countries of the Asia-Pacific Region;
c. outline a general schedule of research activities, including, if a research trip to Canada is planned, an explanation of why travel assistance to Canada is necessary to fulfil the purpose of the research project, and indications that access to relevant archives will be permitted;
d. include, if applicable, the proposed travel itinerary for the research trip to Canada, with dates of departure and return (or date of termination of the portion of trip supported by a Canada-Asia-Pacific Award in Canadian Studies) and the proposed research program while in Canada, with dates, locations, names of potential professional contacts, university and institutional visits, etc.;
6. a summary (100 words) of the research proposal mentioned above;
7. an indication of scholarly journals, outside or in Canada, which may reasonably be expected to consider publication of the article(s) resulting from the research;
8. a detailed budget, as outlined in Section 6 (Terms and Conditions), providing details of other funding sources (in cash or in kind), and specifying the amount requested under this program;
9. the names and addresses of two referees, one of whom should be from other than the applicant's own academic institution, who have been requested to submit confidential letters of recommendation DIRECTLY to ICCS (Ottawa) by the deadline for submission of applications. Letters of recommendation should explain the referees' professional relationship to the applicant and testify to:
. the research ability of the applicant;
a. the suitability of the research proposal as a contribution to the general body of literature in the chosen field;
b. its contribution to the understanding of bilateral and multilateral relations between Canada and the Asia-Pacific Region.
Note: Over and above the two letters of reference mentioned above, the selection jury will expect application dossiers of candidates residing in a territory where a national or multinational Canadian Studies association exists to include a letter of support from the association, received DIRECTLY by the ICCS by the same deadline.
8- Selection of Recipients:
Applicants must submit their proposal to the International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS, Ottawa), by December 31, 2003. All applications will be peer reviewed by a jury established by the ICCS, which will include Canadian and foreign academics.
Selection will be based on the following criteria:
1. academic excellence of the proposal;
2. relevance of the proposal to the better understanding of bilateral and/or multilateral relations between Canada and the Asia-Pacific Region;
3. feasibility of the research project;
4. likelihood of publication in a scholarly publication or book upon completion;
5. impact on sustained research and/or teaching on Canada within the Asia-Pacific region.
Priority will be given to projects that relate to contemporary situations and issues characterizing the bilateral and/or multilateral relationships between Canada and the Asia-Pacific Region.
The International Academic Relations Division of Foreign Affairs Canada, in Ottawa, will make final decisions following review of applications and recommendations of the selection jury.
All applicants will be notified in writing of the results of their application, normally within 90 days of the deadline for submission of applications.
