The association was established in December 1984. From an original membership of 14, it has now grown to encompass nearly 400 members and 43 Canadian Studies Centers and Programs across China. Most of them are based on top Chinese education institutions, such as Beijing University, Tsinghua University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, China University of Communications, Wuhan University, Shandong University, Nankai University, Lanzhou University, Sichuan University, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and so on. The objective of ACSC is to encourage and promote research in Canadian Studies in the fields of politics, economics, law, history, language, literature, education, etc. in Chinese colleges, universities and advanced research institutions. It also introduces Canada to the Chinese through translations and publications, promotes cultural and academic exchanges, and enhances the mutual understanding and traditional friendship between the two countries and their peoples. The main activities of the association are its biennial conference, symposia which are jointly sponsored with various universities and institutes, and its newsletter and other publications. The first conference was held in Chongqing in 1984. Subsequent conferences were held respectively in Changchun, 1986; Chengdu 1988; Beijing, 1990; Hoh-hot, 1992; Xian, 1994; Harbin, 1996; Weihai, 1998; Dalian, 2000; Lanzhou, 2002; Chongqing, 2004. The 12th biennial conference will be held in this November in Jinan, Shandong Province.

ACSC has played a positive role in widening the impact of Canada in China through organizing conferences/ workshops, conducting research, teaching courses and translating & publishing books on Canada.

Reviewing the past experiences, the executive committee and all members of ACSC would like to promote the Canadian studies in China in two directions: to close the relations among the Canadianists in China and around the world; to broaden and deepen our research on Canada; to enhance the influence of Canadian study in China. Now we are trying our best to attract more and more scholars, especially young scholars, to be interested in Canada and learn more about a contemporary Canada.
